Quick answer
HomeGuide's 2026 guide puts most HVAC repairs at $150 to $450, national average $293, with service calls at $75 to $200 and labor at $75 to $150 per hour. Duct problems can qualify for help: SRP covers 75% of duct testing and repair up to $400, while APS ended its residential rebates in January 2026. Check that the contractor's Arizona license class covers the specific work.

What counts as an HVAC repair rather than an AC repair?
Your heating and cooling share a thermostat, a blower and a duct system. When the symptom shows up in both seasons, or in some rooms but not others, the cause is often in those shared parts:
- Thermostat and controls: wrong settings, failing sensors, bad wiring or a smart thermostat not matched to the equipment.
- Blower and airflow: a weak blower motor, dirty filter or blocked returns.
- Ducts: leaks, crushed or disconnected runs in the attic, and poorly balanced supply registers.
- Short cycling: the system turns on and off every few minutes, which can come from oversizing, controls or refrigerant problems.
What do common HVAC repairs cost?
These figures are from HomeGuide's 2026 HVAC repair guide. HomeGuide also lists averages of $319 for AC service and $268 for furnace service.
| Repair | HomeGuide estimate |
|---|---|
| Service call | $75 to $200 |
| AC capacitor | $100 to $250 |
| Condenser fan motor | $200 to $700 |
| Furnace blower motor | $300 to $900 |
| Furnace control board | $300 to $650 |
| Evaporator coil | $650 to $2,400 |
| AC compressor | $1,300 to $2,500 |
| Furnace heat exchanger | $1,000 to $3,000 |
HomeGuide's maintenance estimate is $150 to $300 per year. For AC-specific parts, see AC repair; for furnaces and heat pumps, see heating repair.
Could the thermostat be the problem?
Thermostat faults are among the cheapest to fix, so rule them out first. Check that the mode and set point are right, replace the batteries, and make sure the thermostat is not in direct sun or next to a supply vent, which can make it read the wrong temperature. If you recently installed a smart thermostat, confirm it is configured for your equipment type: a heat pump and a gas furnace are wired and controlled differently. APS customers who enroll a smart thermostat in Cool Rewards should also know that during summer events the thermostat is raised a few degrees for about 2 to 3 hours, which can look like a fault if you forgot you enrolled. You can override an event at any time.
Why do some rooms stay hot while others are fine?
Uneven temperatures usually point to airflow, not the equipment. Common causes are leaking or disconnected ducts, undersized returns and rooms with heavy sun load. The FTC suggests inspecting exposed ducts for holes and separated sections, sealing small leaks with mastic or metal tape rather than duct tape, and considering a professional for leaky ducts. A duct leakage test gives a measured answer instead of guesses.
Are there rebates for duct testing and sealing?
- SRP's Duct Test and Repair rebate covers 75% of costs, up to $400 for single-family detached homes and $300 for other housing types, through a participating BPI-certified contractor by April 30, 2027.
- APS customers should budget for duct work without a utility rebate. APS discontinued its residential energy-efficiency rebates on January 1, 2026 under Arizona Corporation Commission Decision No. 81584, as Champion Air's guide for APS customers reports, and the page that once listed a $250 duct sealing rebate is gone.
Which Arizona license covers which part of the job?
The ROC license classifications split HVAC work into several classes. Check that the class on the contractor's license matches the work in your contract.
| Work | Example ROC classes |
|---|---|
| Residential AC and refrigeration | R-39, R-39R, CR-39, CR-79 |
| Comfort heating, ventilating, evaporative cooling | CR-58, C-58 |
| Ductwork and sheet metal | R-45, CR-45, C-45 |
Look up any contractor in the ROC contractor search before work starts. Our guide on choosing an AC repair company covers estimates and contract terms.
What should you ask before approving a whole-system repair?
- What measurements support the diagnosis, such as static pressure, temperature split or duct leakage numbers?
- Will the fix be checked afterward with the same measurement?
- Is the system the right size, and was a load calculation done?
- Which parts are covered by warranty, and does it include labor?
ENERGY STAR notes that airflow problems can reduce efficiency by up to 15 percent, so a measured airflow fix can pay back on summer bills. If you want an introduction to a vetted licensed contractor, send us a request.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my HVAC system turn on and off every few minutes?
That pattern is called short cycling. Common causes include an oversized system, a thermostat in a bad location or failing, a dirty filter or coil, and refrigerant or electrical problems. It wastes energy and wears parts, so have a licensed technician measure what is happening before replacing anything.
How much does an HVAC service call cost?
HomeGuide's 2026 guide lists HVAC service calls at $75 to $200 and says most companies deduct the fee from the bill or apply it to the first hour of labor. Labor is typically $75 to $150 per hour. Ask about after-hours pricing before you book a visit.
Can I seal my own ducts?
The FTC says you can seal small leaks in exposed ducts yourself with mastic sealant or metal tape, not duct tape, and that hiring a professional for leaky ducts may be worthwhile. SRP's duct rebate requires a participating BPI-certified contractor, so DIY work will not qualify for it.
